• What Is Jailbreaking On An iPhone - Pros & Cons Of Modifying Your Apple Device

The Standard iPhone Settings

For most of us, our iPhone works just fine right out of the box. There are plenty of features. If the need arises, a trip to the Apple store means we can download the app or game we’re looking for. This is more than enough… For most of us…

There is a small group of people that remain frustrated. Some of the simple things on their phones just do not behave the way they want them to. Possibly, a desired app isn’t compatible, or a game is unavailable.

These people “break out of jail”. They want to download any app from anywhere. They want to customize and modify their phones to fit their personal style. This is Jailbreaking.

Removing Restrictions Via Jailbreaking

By default, on a standard Apple device, developers can not modify certain parts of the operating system. Jailbreaking removes these default restrictions from the device.

Using a “tool” or an independent developer site, you can “break open” your phone, customize its look and feel, install third-party applications, and load software and games that are not available in the Apple store.

How Does It Work?

There are MANY independent developers that have designed software applications that break open your phone’s file system. This will remove the security features that keep you from modifying your device.

An example of a popular developer is Cydia. They offer a tool to jailbreak an iPhone and have a store where you can purchase and install apps that are not available on default operating systems.

Some Of The Benefits Of Jailbreaking

After a jailbreak, You Can...

  • Install custom themes or settings
  • Set up a continuous mobile hotspot
  • Change the look and feel of your phone
  • Play games not available in the Apple store
  • Install pirated software not available on the standard system

Some Of The Risks Of Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking could...

  • Cause an iPhone to behave erratically
  • Void the warranty with Apple
  • Remove security & make you vulnerable to malware
  • Cause apps to lag and drain your battery
  • Remove images, videos, & music from your device
  • Allow unknown developers and hackers access to private information

Is Jailbreaking The Same As Unlocking?

No. For a long time, cellular carriers could “lock” devices so they would only run on their own network. Users would “unlock” a device in order to switch carriers. Unlocking is not a modification of the operating system and is different from jailbreaking. FYI - cellular companies are no longer allowed to lock phones for the duration of a contract.

Can You Restore A Modified Phone?

Yes! You can restore a jailbroken iphone by using the restore function on itunes.

Apple Support & Warranty

Keep in mind - Apple can not keep you from jailbreaking your phone, but they can refuse to support a modified device as part of their operating agreement.

Also, a warranty on your phone can be voided by jailbreaking.

Final Thoughts

Weigh the pros and cons before deciding if Jailbreaking is right for you. Figure out if the risks involved are worth the rewards.
